Greg and Julie both grew up in Vancouver, BC. Greg began attending church at a young age and became a believer at 11. Julie came to know the Lord while attending UBC, where she graduated from Rehab Medicine as a Physiotherapist. Greg received his undergraduate degree from UBC in Geography and went on to study Architecture at the University of Oregon. They were married in 1994.
After 10 years of private practice in Vancouver, Greg began to volunteer with Engineering Ministries International (www.emicanada.org) in 2001 as a volunteer architect on annual short term missions trips. During these trips to provide architecture and engineering services to churches and missionary organizations operating in the developing nations, Greg felt a calling to pursue the work of eMi full time. In 2004 Greg and Julie responded to the call and began to raise the necessary financial support for his salary. In the summer of 2005, they quit their jobs in Vancouver and moved their family of five to Calgary to join eMi's Canada office. After five years on staff Greg is now the Executive Director of eMi Canada.
Beyond being eMi Canada's senior administrator, Greg is the project approver for all overseas projects and continues to be a project leader 2-3 times each year. Over the years, eMi has developed a broader scope of ministry to include Disaster Response, Construction Management and Vocational Education but the main ministry of eMi continues to be the short term mission design project. The kind of ministries eMi provides design serves for on the projects include schools, orphanages, churches, seminaries, vocational training centres as well as medical clinics and hospitals. Also included are purely engineering projects like bridges, dams as well as fresh water and sanitation systems. eMi aims to provide designs services to Christian ministries that serve the poor and spread the Good News of Jesus in the developing nations. In this way, eMi strives to live up to its motto of "Designing a World of Hope".
Julie is currently working part-time at Peter Lougheed Centre as a physiotherapist, partly to keep up her skills but also to supplement the support raised for Greg's salary. Julie has also used her skills and experience as a physiotherapist to serve on short term mission projects, serving with Medical Ministry International (MMI). First she was in Peru (2009) and then in post-earthquake Haiti (2010). She and Greg have three children: Caitlin (1997), Cameron (1999) and Connor (2004).
