What Is Baptism?

Baptism is our personal expression of our faith commitment to Jesus Christ. It is a decision to tell our world that we love Jesus, that we believe that He died and rose again for us, and that we want to live our lives for Him.

We understand from Scripture that baptism is a personal choice we make for ourselves after entering into a relationship with God through His Son, Jesus. Just as we believe no one can make the choice for us to believe in Christ, neither should someone else make the decision for us to be baptized. The decision to be baptized is one of the most important choices we make to express our profound gratitude to the grace God extends to us through Christ.

Why Does Baptism Matter?

First and foremost because Jesus tells us that His followers willingly choose a life of obedience. He reminds us often that those who love Him need to embrace His purposes for their lives. Jesus says if we love Him, we will keep His commandments (John 14:15). It's that simple! If we love Him, we want to do the things that please Him. Our choice to be baptized pleases Him!

Baptism also is a powerful expression to others about the transformation God works in our lives when we enter into a relationship with Him. The biblical pattern is for a person to come into a relationship with the father through Christ and to express that new relationship publicly through baptism. Baptism doesn't save us ... it simply reflects a new relationship with God that has captured our heart and allegiance. We declare in and through baptism that Jesus is our Saviour, Lord and the One who can tell us what to do with our lives.

How Do We Baptize At Foothills?

Here at Foothills we have embraced baptism by immersion as our practice. We understand the Scriptural pattern to be that an individual, after placing their trust in Jesus, enters into the water symbolizing death to self and emerges from the water expressing their new life in Christ.

Who Should Be Baptized?

Everyone who has entered into a new relationship with Jesus! We practice "believer's baptism" which means individuals make a personal decision to be baptized, as opposed to a parental decision. Rather than baptizing infants, we dedicate children to God and allow them to make their own choice to believe and be baptized.
